The Black Forest Horse is a critically endangered German breed that originated in the Baden-Württemberg region of southern Germany's Black Forest. Their main habitat lies between the northern Hotzenwald and the Kinzital to the north. Some other names for these horses are Schwarzwälder Füchs, Schwarzwälder Kaltblut, Wälder Horse, and Saint Märgener.

They appeared for the first time in the Black Forest's Abbey of Saint Peter's records at the beginning of the fifteenth century. Despite being endangered, these horses have been recognized as an important property of German people for over 600 years.
In the past, heavy horses called Wälderpferd, or "Black Forest Horses," were frequently employed for farm and forestry work. Although this breed isn’t evaluated as powerful as the large draft horse breeds, they’re stable and capable. Their weight often ranges from 1,250 pounds to 1,400 pounds and the average height is from 14.3 to 15.5 hands. The stallions are a bit taller and they can reach up to 16 hands. In addition, they are also gifted with incredible patience and gentle temperament. This makes them an ideal choice for first-time or novice horse owners. These gorgeous horses are typically used for driving, but many rely on them for pleasure, too, such as carriage rides.

When discussing the appearance of these horses, chestnut is the predominant hue that people think of, along with a brightened flaxen mane and tail. However, the coats of this breed are very diverse, including colors from pale to very dark, sometimes almost black. These dark-colored horses often have a pale or silvery mane and they’re known as the Dunkelfuchs in German. The appearance of the Black Forest Horse is somewhat similar to a Haflinger or the Noriker, but these native horses of Germany are well-suited for the intense climate of their native highlands.

Regrettably, there is a threat to this horse breed. As of 2017, it was recorded that there was a population of 88 stallions and 1,077 mares. Thankfully, these horses are reported to have a high fertility rate. And through careful breeding, there are hopes to see those numbers increase in the near future. There are many individuals dedicated to growing the breed's numbers so they will never become a thing of the past.
