The underappreciated film is a hit with Netflix subscribers and has been in the top 10 since its May 20th release. The gripping drama follows June's journey as the disappearance of her mother in Colombia becomes national headlines. June makes full use of the internet and other available technology to try to trace her mother and learn the truth about the circumstances surrounding her enigmatical disappearance. She discovers sinister truths about her mother along the road, a reference to earlier works by the Missing authors from the past.
Missing is not based on a true story, despite its realistic concept and creative use of contemporary technologies in its storytelling. Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty created the idea for the movie and wrote the script, both of which are wholly original works of fiction. The script for Missing was written by Nick Johnson and Will Merrick, while Ohanian and Chaganty really wrote the story. Under Chaganty's guidance, Johnson and Merrick also edited Run and Searching.
As a stand-alone sequel to Searching, Missing takes place in the same universe but has no narrative or characters in common with it. Ohanian and Chaganty also wrote the original screenplays for both films as well as the suspense thriller Run, an original Hulu production starring Sarah Paulson. Due to the regular collaboration between writers and directors, Missing and Searching have a lot of aesthetic similarities and visual production values. These three films have some understated links that their creators took sure to incorporate.

There are various hidden references that link Run, Missing, and Searching. Protagonists in both Missing and Searching employ a variety of modern technology and communication tools, such as computers, mobile phones, and Apple watches, to unravel mysteries and expose crimes. June enjoys the Netflix original real crime series Unfiction, which makes reference to Margot's disappearance in Searching and the online search technique her father David employed to track her out. A small passage in Missing provides an update on what happened to Sarah Paulson's character after Run ended.
The three tales are set in the same universe and are related by shared themes of family secrets and technology's inventive potential for good in movies like Missing.
#3. Missing is now streaming on Netflix!
A standalone sequel to the 2018 film Searching from the same producers follows 18-year-old June as she employs her amateur sleuthing abilities to track for her mother and her mother's lover. June eventually learns things that her mother intended to keep a secret as the story garners national attention. Similar to its predecessor, Missing employs technology as a narrative tool, including video conversations, text messages, search engines, voicemails, and social media. Will Merrick and Nick Johnson directed and wrote the suspenseful thriller, with Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, Searching's co-writers, providing the story.
The story is about Grace, June's mother, and Kevin are vacationing in Colombia, which is fantastic for June since she's organizing a massive party for the duration of their trip. But when June is meant to pick up her mother and Kevin at the airport days later, they fail to appear. No calls, messages, or anything else. So June sets out to uncover them using her expertise in digital sleuthing and information gained from binge-watching true-crime shows. But when she discovers more about their whereabouts, she realizes that Kevin might not be who he claims to be. Additionally, her mother could not be.
