Halle Bailey, who is also set to play Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, will play young Nettie.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who starred in The Help and Lovecraft Country, will play Mama, Celie and Nettie's mother. Louis Gossett Jr., an Oscar-winning veteran actor, will play Ol' Mister Johnson, Mister's father. David Alan Grier, a comedian and actor who has appeared in In Living Color and A Soldier's Story, will play Rev. Samuel Avery, a missionary who helps Nettie in Africa. Tamela J. Mann, a gospel singer and actress who has worked with Tyler Perry, will play First Lady. Deon Cole, a comedian and actor who has appeared in Black-ish and Angie Tribeca, will play Alfonso. Stephen Hill, who starred in Magnum P.I. and Luke Cage, will play Henry "Buster" Broadnax, Shug's band leader.
