War Sailor, the Norwegian war drama movie, was first showcased at the Norwegian International Film Festival in August 2022 and later went on to be featured in other international film festivals. Its success led to Netflix creating a limited series adaptation of the same name. The series will include new and previously unseen material that had been cut from the movie as well as being written and directed by Gunnar Vikene and produced by Maria Ekerhovd, Karsten Stöter, Pierre Ellul, and Anika Psaila Savona. Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “When WWII erupts, two sailors on a Norwegian merchant ship face brutal conditions as they fight to survive a conflict they were never asked to join.” It is a story of survival and hopes to save their lives and see their loved ones, once again. The story follows Alfred Garnes, a working-class sailor, who has recently become the father of a third child.
He along with his partner Wally finds work on a merchant ship, to support his family, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. But when World War II breaks out, they unwillingly become unarmed civilians on the front lines of the war when Norway was under siege by the Germans. The two men struggle for survival in a spiral of violence and death, where at any moment German submarines may attack their valuable vessels.

It’s not just the story of the merchants, but also their families who wonder if their husband, brother or even friend is alive. Alfred’s wife Cecilia is all alone in Bergen when war breaks out, raising three children on her own, not knowing whether she will ever see Alfred again.
The series will show how everyone is affected by the events, where the fleeting merchants become a source for transporting supplies across the world to support the Allies like Great Britain, France and the US. And the families are trying to survive through constant terror & bombings, only wanting to reunite with their whole family.
