The fifth season of The Crown came to an end in 1997 when Princess Diana accepted an invitation to travel to St. Tropez with Mohamed Al-Fayed (she would pass away later that year, in August). The sixth season should continue where the fifth left off and last until at least 2001, if not later.

And yes, the series will cover the death. The Crown's cast and crew were preparing to shoot scenes that depicted the events leading up to Princess Diana's murder, along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, according to a report from Deadline on October 12. Peter Morgan, the show's creator, has made it plain that the actual crash will not be seen on TV. An insider with knowledge of the production said that instead, viewers would likely witness "the car leaving The Ritz after midnight with paparazzi in pursuit and then the aftermath with the British Ambassador to France swinging into action with the Foreign Office and then the subsequent constitutional aftermath."

The creator said, "We've been dreading getting to this stage" in the filming. “While we’re calmly carrying on, it’s fair to acknowledge that there’s a certain anxiety – a palpable sense of being slightly on edge. I mean, there’s bombshell sensitivity surrounding this one.” Also planned to be portrayed? As Prince Charles boarded a royal flight to fly Diana's body back to London, Mohamed Al-Fayed encountered casual racism from French officials as he attempted to claim his son's coffin.

On November 1, fresh images from the shoot surfaced, this time featuring Debicki wearing an animal print bathing suit that is virtually a carbon copy of one Princess Diana wore when taking a trip to the Mediterranean with Dodi Fayed just weeks before her passing. It implies that season six will also be particularly focused on Diana's hectic final summer.
