Teens Save A Squirrel Covered In Foam Insulation
Squirrel covered in foam insulation rescued by teens. Read how they saved his life and how he recovered at the vet clinic.
Two teens were enjoying their day in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, when they saw a group of people gathered around a car. They decided to check it out and learned that there was a squirrel under the car who needed urgent help — but when the furry animal came out, the teens couldn’t believe their eyes. The squirrel was completely coated in foam insulation, the kind that is used to seal gaps in buildings. It seemed that he had accidentally run into the foam while it was still wet and got stuck in it when it dried. The poor squirrel could barely move.
The squirrel had somehow gotten himself coated in foam insulation, the kind that people use to seal gaps in their houses. He must have stumbled into the sticky substance while it was still wet — and when it hardened all over him, the poor critter could hardly move.

#1. A Rescue Mission: How Two Teens Saved the Squirrel’s Life
The injured squirrel touched the hearts of the two teenagers, Jaydon Pettipas and Aidan Hart, who knew he needed urgent help to survive. They dashed into a grocery store and grabbed a milk crate to carry the squirrel in, then started calling their friends and family for advice on what to do next.
Dr. Melanie Eagan, owner of the St. George Veterinary Clinic, received a call from one of the boys’ moms at the vet clinic after they had tried to get help from others. “After calling a few people for help, one of the boys’ moms finally called me at the vet clinic,” she told The Dodo.
The group drove the squirrel more than 21 miles to the St. George Veterinary Clinic, where they handed him over to Eagan. They hoped she could do something to save his life. Eagan was amazed by what she saw when she took the squirrel from them. She had talked to them on the phone before they came.

Eagan said, “He could hardly move and, really, I’m amazed he was still alive — the foam was blocking off most of his mouth and nostrils.” The foam had hardened around his body, leaving only his back legs slightly free.
She put the squirrel to sleep and started to remove the foam insulation from his body with rubbing alcohol and a flea comb. It was a long and difficult task, but she succeeded and was amazed by the result.

She said it was an hour-long process. “There were some patches of fur gone and some abrasions on his skin,” she said, “but in the end he didn’t look too bad!”

She was surprised that he survived after seeing how bad he was when he came in. He was very tired and scared, so he cuddled up and slept for a few hours. She stayed with him at the clinic the whole time to make sure he was OK.

#2. A Happy Ending: How the Squirrel Recovered and Returned to the Wild
She let him go back to nature when he woke up and felt much better. She was very happy to see him healthy and free again, and he was too.
Eagan said, “He was pretty excited to get out of the clinic and up a tree.” She added, “If it hadn’t been for those teenage boys, he would not have lived.”
