Every first Monday of May, the fashion world gears up for its biggest night of the year: the Met Gala. The biggest red carpet event of the year always brings out Hollywood's best and brightest, and this year is no different.
This year, the Costume Institute's exhibition is "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" to celebrate the work and life of the legendary designer. From Old Hollywood glamour hair to bold color experiments on the lips and eyes, Met Gala 2023 proved to be one of the best ones yet when it came to the beauty department. Below are the best looks at the Met Gala 2023 red carpet.
#1. Michaela Coel

2023 co-chair Michaela Coel looked like a bronze goddess in a heavily embellished sheer gown from Schiaparelli haute couture. Cole also wore cornrows with a gold leaf detail at the back to match her embellished dress. She kept her makeup look classic with black liner to define her eyes.
#2. Penélope Cruz
Penélope Cruz wore a light blue embellished Chanel gown featuring a sheer hood. In a belted white vintage Chanel gown studded with rhinestones and a sequined hood worn over a chignon, Cruz remembered her favorite memory of Karl Lagerfeld, who she described as a friend. After his last show before he died in 2019, she told Guillén, Cruz took a walk with Lagerfeld in Central Park. “He was very very happy that night,” she said. “We didn’t even know that he wasn’t feeling well.”
#3. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky
Usually last but never least, Rihanna arrived at the Met Gala with A$AP Rocky for the red carpet finale. She wore a long white Valentino gown adorned with a bouquet of white rosettes, while A$AP opted for a black Gucci blazer and red kilt over a pair of jeans. After the singer shed her hooded Valentino cape to reveal a delicate spaghetti-strap gown of the same color, she proceeded to unfurl her dress almost all the way across the steps of the Met.
#4. Cardi B
Cardi B nailed the rosette trend in this billowing Thom Browne look inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's personal uniform.
#5. Gisele Bündchen
Supermodel Gisele Bündchen returns to the Met Gala red carpet without her longtime plus-one in an angelic Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer gown. Bundchen’s 2007 architectural white gown, with an enormous white feathered cape over top, recalled the years she wore oversize feathery angel wings walking in Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

#6. Janelle Monáe
Not about to hand the “largest dress of the evening” award to Gisele Bündchen, the singer and actress appeared on the Met steps in a Thom Browne ensemble that turned out to be several outfits at once. A gigantic conical suit gave way to an enormous white dress shirt, which then peeled away to reveal a mesh hoop-skirt dress and black lingerie.
#7. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway didn't wear Chanel, but she paid homage to the house in her tweed Atelier Versace gown. Hathaway’s Versace tribute to Lagerfeld was a perfect marriage of two instantly recognizable styles: the prim Chanel tweed and the slinky, boldly sexy Versace evening gown.
#8. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian wears "a draped skirt and top made from over 50,000 freshwater pearls and over 16,000 crystals," created custom for her by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli, along with a pearl choker and ring also created for the evening.
#9. Doja Cat
The best tribute to Lagerfeld's cat Choupette came from none other than Doja Cat in custom Oscar de la Renta. The embellished gown was complete with cat ears on the hood. The singer also added a prosthetic cat nose and claw-like nails. The rapper went all out in cat-like prosthetics and a flick of feline-inspired liner.
#10. Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa’s dress was older than she was: The creamy white tweed gown, with a princess's waist, contrast embroidery, and fringe at its hemline, is from Lagerfeld’s 1992 Chanel bridal collection. It was once worn by Claudia Schiffer.
#11. Jared Leto
The Choupette tributes kept rolling in until they reached their logical conclusion: Jared Leto in a head-to-toe, mascot-style cat costume modeled after the famous blue-eyed, cream-colored Birman cat. After removing the headpiece, Leto was whisked into a second ensemble - black and caped with a sparkling beaded collar - right there on the carpet. But one has to imagine the first will be the one that gets remembered.
#12. Kendall Jenner
Who needs a dress? Anything a gown can do, Jenner’s funky black Marc Jacobs leotard, cape, and platform boots can do better.
#13. Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish wears a high-neck sheer gown over a bustier and gloves with matching embellishments, Piferi platforms, and Cartier jewelry.
#14. Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid wears a bustier and briefs draped with patterned tulle, plus pearls.
#15. Chloe Fineman
The “Saturday Night Live” cast member made sure a Choupette-less red carpet didn’t have to mean an entirely kitty-free event: Fineman accessorized her custom Wiederhoeft gown - a pink sheath with a garland of dark-purple rosettes around her shoulders - with a glittering pink cat-shaped handbag.
